CHAPTER 10

INSIDE THE TREE

Not only does she run, but she runs fast.

I’m sprinting, managing to dodge anything in my path. I have no doubt in my mind that, once Alex recovers from the shock of me slapping him across the face, he’ll come after me. Even if he doesn’t, Apollo will.

He’s always saying how it’s not a good idea to offend a god. Pretty sure I just did that.

Oh, well.

I’m flying through the woods, but the golden dress I’m still wearing is a little constricting. Without missing a step, I heft up the skirt, reaching for the hem. With a couple of firm tugs, I split it up the side, giving my legs room to move. After that, I really begin to motor.

At that point, I realize I’m not the one in control. The other Daphne is lending me her speed, desperate to escape Apollo. Since I’m pretty pissed off that Alex turned on me like that, I left her.

I don’t know where I’m going. It doesn’t matter. Right now, I just want to get away from Alex, and it seems like Daphne knows where she’s going. She heads right for the woods, but it isn’t any part of the woods I’ve seen during my stay in the Other. For one thing, it’s much darker, kind of like the trees are growing closer together, blotting out the sun.

Good. As Daphne told me, Apollo is the sun god. The way this crazy place works, I wouldn’t be surprised if he can’t use the sun to spy on me or something. Though he’s spent the last few days warning me about heading off into the woods alone, I can’t heed that now. Not while he’s a bigger threat to me than anything else in the Other.

Plus, as fast as I’m running, there’s a good chance I can outrun all the other monsters here.

Know what I almost don’t outrun?

An arrow.

Thud.

My head whips over my shoulder even as I force myself to sprint faster. A gleaming golden arrow is jutting out of a tree about five feet behind me. It shines brightly, breaking up the gloom. So brightly, in fact, that it resembles a dark yellow neon.

Are you shitting me? I thought the slap got my point across. If that didn’t, me running off into the woods to avoid him should’ve done the trick. I don’t want anyone shooting me with a golden arrow to make me fall in love with a god so arrogant, he doesn’t understand why a modern New York might not want to throw herself at his sandals after a couple of days.

I’m fast. The arrow is faster.

Thud.

That one—another golden arrow—whistles past me, so close I feel the wind its wake brushing up against my cheek, before it hits a different tree. This one is about ten feet in front of me, proving that the archer is toying with me.

The tree, whispers Daphne. She sounds farther away than she had before, but I can still sense her deep inside of me.
